Crushed stone is an aggregate that has been crushed, reduced in size and screened to the proper specification. The material ranges in size from stone dust screenings to large boulders. A cubical product is needed for use in Superpave Mixes, or projects that have a crush count specification.
The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) publishes a listing of specifications for various construction aggregate products, which are suitable for specific construction purposes.
State transportation departments further refine aggregate material specifications in order to tailor aggregate use to the needs and available supply in their particular locations.
This material may be sold by the cubic yard or by the ton, depending on where it was loaded.
Crushed Stone Uses
Crushed stone is the “go to” stone for a variety of projects such as drainage applications like French drains, septic drain fields, road-side edge drains and retaining wall drains. Crushed stone is also used as base material under foundations, roads and railroads.
